Mother’s Day holds so many emotions at once.
This weekend, our beloved GirlTREK organizer Michelle in Seattle will celebrate her first Mother’s Day since her son Robert was killed last September. Our beloved national staff member Cynthia will mark another Mother’s Day carrying the heartbreak of losing her daughter, Nia. And at the same time, our VP of Marketing, Brittany, will celebrate her very first Mother’s Day as a new mom.
This is the truth of womanhood. Of what we carry.
Some of us are grieving mothers.
Some of us are daughters missing the women who raised us and wishing for just one more conversation, one more laugh, one more hug.
Some of us have complicated relationships with our mothers.
Some of us mothered ourselves.
Some of us are praying to become mothers and do not know if it will happen.
And that is why this walk matters.
Because every woman deserves to be reminded: you do not walk alone. And every one of us has the responsibility to make sure another woman or girl knows it too.
If this weekend feels especially tender, we want to offer a few places to turn. We’re holding close the story of GirlTREK member Deborah McGlown, whose book, Let’s Go Chasing Waterfalls: Pain Turned Passion Into Purpose, tells the story of a mother walking her way through grief after the loss of her child and transforming that pain into purpose.
We also want to lift up the beautiful “Mommy & Me” walks beginning to form across our movement as part of our Legacy in Motion: Motherhood Special Impact Crew — women walking, healing, and building memories together one conversation at a time. If you’d like to learn more or join, fill out the interest form and connect with the crew inside the Underground app. |
