Black Families Choose Joy Over Black Friday: Nearly 2,000 Family Crew Leaders Mobilize an Estimated 10,000 Participants for GirlTREK’s Black Family 5K Next Weekend
(WASHINGTON, DC) — Next weekend, while stores across America gear up for Black Friday lines, nearly 2,000 Black Family 5K Crew Leaders are preparing something far more powerful: a national moment of joy and unity.
With each Crew Leader rallying their household, extended kin, and chosen family, GirlTREK estimates that nearly 10,000 Black people will walk together during Thanksgiving Weekend as part of the Black Family 5K, one of the largest intergenerational health activations for Black families in the United States.
WHO:
Black families of every shape and size. Elders, parents, kids, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
WHAT:
The Black Family 5K — a national walk of joy, tradition, healing, and liberation.
WHEN:
Thanksgiving Weekend. Schedule your walk right after dinner. Or schedule it for Black Friday. Or schedule it for Saturday or Sunday. Just schedule it!
WHERE:
Anywhere families choose:
Neighborhood blocks. Parks. Church parking lots. Grandma’s street.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
As more people embrace Blackout Weekend, stepping back from Black Friday consumerism — the Black Family 5K turns that pause into purpose.
A CELEBRATION OF EVERY CREW LEADER WHO SAID YES
Nearly 2,000 Crew Leaders have already stepped up to organize their families — choosing connection over chaos and movement over stress. Their leadership is creating a national moment of hope and togetherness at a time when Black families need it most.
